Did You Know: Cape Hatteras Lighthouse

Cape Hatteras, NCCape Hatteras Lighthouse, on Hatteras Island in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, is one of the most recognizable lighthouses in the world, thanks to its distinctive black and white candy cane striping.

The beacon was built in 1803 and its light marked the dangerous shoals of the Outer Banks. At 208 feet, it is the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States and today its beam shines 20 miles out into the ocean.

More than 175,000 visitors come to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse every year; its big attraction is the 257-step climb to the top.
